We take the business of learning seriously - we discuss learning with children, identify when they learn best, what helps them and what they can do if learning is difficult. We don't believe we are 'clever' or otherwise; we know we can succeed with good attitudes to learning such as determination and not giving up. We expect to get it wrong sometimes, but we learn from our mistakes, give it another go and keep practising. Children are taught to make links, to reflect and to analyse.

At Horton Grange Primary School we believe that the curriculum should be as exciting and stimulating as possible. We aim to promote a love of learning by making school fun and relevant whilst at the same time ensuring standards are high in order to prepare your children for the future.

We positively encourage our children to engage in the wider curriculum through drama, focused themed weeks, visits, school productions and residentials. This is a key part of our approach. We have links with other Blyth schools including The Dales Special School, Collingwood School and Media Arts College in Morpeth and Argyle Street Primary in Camden London. Our Y6 pupils have in the past been asked to speak at a national conference at University College London about our Equalities Week. They were sensational!

In English and maths we set next steps with our children and teach them to check on their own progress. Historically we have used an assertive mentoring system to manage learning targets, progress, behaviour and attendance. This process has now evolved but elements are retained within out learning and progress files. Your child will become used to talking about how they are progressing in all aspects of school life and you will be kept in the loop at Parents’ Evenings, through drop in sessions, reports and workshops. You are also welcome to ask for an appointment at any time.

At varying times your child may be taught in a whole class, small group or one to one depending on their needs. Sometimes we ability group children to make sure they receive targeted input e.g. Read, Write Inc. Children may be taught by staff with subject expertise e.g. in MFL or PE, and at times children may work with a teaching assistant in class or away from the classroom. Learning is of course continue to be planned carefully so that it is inclusive and designed to meet the needs of all of our pupils. Priorities will be:

• teaching of the basic skills of reading, writing and number
• richness of experience to excite and challenge across the curriculum
• opportunities for first-hand experience, practical work, investigation and enquiry to help children become independent learners and problem solvers
• our community and our cultural heritage as well as making good use of our school grounds, the local area and further afield.

At Horton Grange we consider the development of strong literacy and maths skills an absolute priority to be embedded across all aspects of our work. In maths we include number facts and times tables. Our approach in maths is always to move from the concrete to the abstract, making effective use of practical resources to ensure conceptual development. In literacy we include the development of good communication skills as well as the teaching of reading, writing, handwriting and spelling, punctuation and grammar. Basic skills are taught for a time each day, which of course enables our children to successfully access the wider curriculum.
